Three friends, one shared Google Doc, and a frustration with paying for TV that didn’t work. iBostreaming registered in Tallinn, Estonia.
A small team building one IPTV service that actually works.
We started iBostreaming because we were the customers. We paid for cable, paid for sport apps, paid for Netflix, and still missed half the things we wanted to watch. So we built the thing we wished existed.
We were three people paying for five things and still missing the match.
The idea wasn’t original. It came out of a WhatsApp group in March 2021. Three of us were complaining about the same thing — paying $200 a month for cable, Netflix, Disney+, a sports app, and somehow still hunting for the channel when the kickoff happened.
One of us was an expat in Berlin who couldn’t watch his home news. One had four kids who wanted four different shows at the same time. The third was tired of paying for fifty things every month and not finishing any of them. So we built a service that did all of it from one login. That’s the whole story.
We registered iBostreaming as a private limited company in Estonia in March 2021 (because that’s where the e-Residency made it fastest, not because of any tax cleverness — we pay tax there). Within six months we had a hundred customers, most of them friends and friends of friends. We answered every support ticket ourselves.
Five years later, we still answer most of them ourselves.
Five years, briefly.
First 1,000 customers. Most of them came from a single Reddit thread in r/cordcutters that we didn’t plant. We still owe whoever started it.
Moved infrastructure to multi-server failover after one too many support tickets during a Champions League final. Set the bar at “no freezing during the goal” — we hold ourselves to it now.
Crossed 5,000 households. Hired our first full-time support person who isn’t a founder. Added crypto payments because customers in three different countries kept asking.
8 people on the team. Customers in 142 countries. Refund rate stays under 2%.
Preparing for the World Cup. Building extra server capacity for what will probably be the busiest streaming month in our history.
Three of us started it. Eight of us run it.
Most of us still answer customer tickets. If you email support, there’s a real chance one of these three will reply.
